We appreciate any gift you can make and will put it to very good use.

Don Brown and ICOR Director, Inez Dale greet a client at the door.

ICOR staff first check for identification and assess the client requests for aid before they begin to process the client. Other ICOR volunteers conduct detailed interviews, checking facts and also looking for possible overlooked sources of help of which the client may not be aware.

Quite often, besides the food or financial assistance, the ICOR staff --drawing on their years of experience and caring for people in our community, provides clients with valuable information.

WHAT IS ICOR?
ICOR is a private, faith-based crisis intervention mission, which is supported by the united efforts of Kinston area churches, civic organizations and individuals.  It assists Lenoir County residents with food, medicine, fuel, housing, transportation or utilities when an emergency or crisis situation occurs. Through church and civic donations ICOR maintains a full service pantry. It coordinates efforts to relieve the client's crisis with all other Lenoir County social service agencies, including Salvation Army, Red Cross, Women's Outreach, Friends of the Homeless, SAFE and Ministries of Mercy.

The only requirements for assistance are: a verifiable crisis; a written referral from any agency, church or organization in Lenoir County; and a N.C. Dept. of Motor Vehicles identification card (driver's license or ID) that proves residency in Lenoir County.  ICOR provides immediate monetary or food assistance along with helpful counseling that directs clients to other agencies that can aid in solving the crisis and provide ongoing assistance, if needed.  In many instances, our counseling is more valuable than the limited monetary assistance.   Payments are made to the vendor requiring payment, not to the Client.

We purposefully limit the number and types of assistance given to a family in order to allow them to utilize their own resources and to prevent dependency.  Many clients have poor budgeting skills or addiction problems that can be solved with the coordination of other agencies.  We cannot repeat service to clients who return to ICOR without having accessed the services we have recommended.

ICOR is fully supported by donations and provides our service at no cost to clients or others.  More than 30 volunteers working once or twice per month help to staff the offices and pantry of ICOR. Call if you would like to volunteer at ICOR. We need you and your services! It is a blessing to help in any way at ICOR.

Ora Brown, the Daily Coordinator, has been with ICOR 23 years.
